Part 1: The Study of Life
The Science of Biology
Review
Biology is the study of
things, which can be categorized into three great
groups,
termed
, which are further divided into six
kingdoms.
All living organisms share five basic properties
organization: all organisms are composed of
cells.
: all organisms use
energy.
: all organisms maintain stable internal
conditions.
and reproduction: all organisms grow and reproduce.
: all organisms possess heritable information about how they look and function.
Living organisms exhibit
levels of complexity and organization:
cellular,
organismal,
and
population
levels.
Novel properties appear in each level of the hierarchy as a consequence of structural organization; these are called
properties. Five themes emerge from the study of biology:
: the genetic change in a species over
time.
of
energy:
the sun is the source of energy flowing through most organisms.
between two organisms who obtain mutual
benefit
from the interaction.
determines
: biological structures are well suited to
functions.
: all organisms maintain a relatively stable internal
environment.
How Scientists Think:
reasoning
is using specific observations to formulate general principles.
reasoning
is using general principles to explain individual observations.
Scientific investigations involve using
to formulate
to explain the observations, in a series of stages called the
process.
Hypotheses that hold up to
testing
over
time
may be combined into statements called
. There are four unifying
in the study of biology.
theory: all organisms are composed of basic units called
cells.
theory:
the information that enables an organism to live is encoded in its
genes.
Theory of
: the genes of an organism are inherited through
chromosomes.
Theory of
: the diversity of the living world is a result of
evolution.
