The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is continuous with the nuclear envelope. Rough ER has embedded ribosomes and is involved in protein synthesis. Smooth ER has no ribosomes and is involved in lipid and carbohydrate synthesis. These macromolecules are moved to the Golgi complex.
